In January I got the opportunity to visit the Zaha Hadid exhibition in London as part of my research for my current second year project.
Her work was very architectural, most of the paintings and drawings were focused on straight lines and shapes using grids to create texture. She used mostly dark colours, focusing on black and white, with the inclusion of forest green, navy blues and dark burgundies. My current project focuses on insects and more natural forms, so I may not use this as inspiration yet, but it's great so have seen this artists work and to have experienced it up close and personal. Her works are much larger than I thought they would be, spanning larger than my height! And yet her working drawings are much much small, being drawn in teeny A5 size sketchbooks. This variation in size was inspiring in general as it showed me that I shouldn't be afraid to work in all different sizes, from tiny sketchbooks to big rolls of paper.
I particularly liked this black and white piece, pictured below. The speckled dots creating texture and shading is a good way of adding a seemingly tactile texture when in reality it is a flat drawn piece of work. I might try out this method of drawing to see whether I like this technique combined with my own drawing style!
