The Anne Gibbs exhibition "Still" at the Mission Gallery in Swansea was very captivating, it's always nice to see less well known artists work as it gives such a wider view on the art and design community.
Anne Gibbs creates fine ceramic pieces to represent found objects by dipping these objects in slip (watered down clays). These objects are then transformed into into dainty, pretty, pastel pieces of artwork. Her exhibition showed lots of little pieces, all arrange meticulously on a few tables around the room. The objects were mostly pastel colours, pale lemon yellow, pretty powder pink and pale blues, with white accentuating lots of the pieces. The use of pale colours reminded me of an old fashioned sweet shop, everything looked so lovely, soft and elegant. Like marshmallows, pink wafers and flying saucers all arranged to create artworks! This was a really aesthetically pleasing exhibition, one piece I really liked was the arranged hexagons. They were white clay hexagons, painted with a stroke of dark green glaze. These relate to my theme in my current project, which is insects, with the imagery of a bee hive. Since viewing this exhibition I have used hexagon shapes, and even tried my own hand at creating hexagon clay pieces, covered with coloured slip, but those are still currently in the kiln, so fingers crossed that they turn out well!
Another element I liked from this exhibition was the round glass encased moss, I thought it was different how the glass seemed to enlarge and bend the texture of the moss inside, and I might use this as a starting point for some natural forms related drawing.
